ADVISORY BOARD

The Sacred Heart Advisory Board acts in a consultative capacity to the pastor and principal. In other words, the advisory board does not make policy nor are members responsible for the actions of the school. The advisory board offers advice, ideas and support to the pastor and principal, who do make policy and do have legal and fiduciary responsibility. Advisory board members have limited liability. This differs from the public school boards of our surrounding communities. It is important to note that the Sacred Heart Advisory Board is not a governing body and does not make decisions for school.

The Sacred Heart Advisory Board meets the 4th Tuesday of each month at 7 pm in the school library. Minutes are posted under the documents section.

If you would like to contact the board, you can reach them at: sh_schoolboard@sacredheartboise.com

Hello! I am currently the Chair of the Advisory Board.  It is an honor to support Sacred Heart School in my position as it has greatly supported my children's growth – spiritually, intellectually, emotionally, and physically.  I grew up in the near west suburbs of Chicago, IL.  I benefited from a Catholic education in elementary school, high school and college.  In 2011, I moved to Boise, ID.  From the start, I was able to find a home at Sacred Heart Parish while working at Boise State University as an academic advisor.  I have had children educated at Sacred Heart School for the last 10 years.  This year I have three children at Sacred Heart in grades 1 (Quinn), 4(Emmet), 6 (Keira), and one at Bishop Kelly (Jack). I am in the third year of his term on the Advisory Board, and I am the Sacred Heart Parish representative.

Sacred Heart School is a very special place for me and my family.

I grew up in Boise and attended Sacred Heart School. My wife, Kelly, is from Spokane and is a product of the Catholic School system, as well. We met at Gonzaga University, and several years later I somehow convinced her to move back to Boise with me. When we started our family there wasn’t really ever a doubt our daughters would attend Sacred Heart. It was full circle for me, and the school reminds Kelly of the small Catholic elementary school she attended in Spokane. Many of my teachers are still at the school (I won’t name names) and my daughters even had Mr. Loffer for a year, who was my principal!

For me, Sacred Heart stands out because of its sense of community. The faculty, staff, and families all are here because they love the values the School represents. It’s been an honor to serve on the advisory board and give back to the school that is such an integral part of my family’s life.

A little background on me/family. We moved to Boise a couple of years ago from Alabama and have loved every minute of it. I graduated(Marketing) from Jacksonville State University where I had the opportunity to attend on a football and track scholarship. In 2020, I completed my MBA at Boise State University. From the moment I walked into Sacred Heart Catholic School, I knew it was the permanent home for our family. The community and kids at this school are truly special and our family has thrived being in this loving environment. Our kids: Landon(7th grade), Madelyn(4th), & Marlowe(K) all attend Sacred Heart and we are members of the Sacred Heart Church as well. I love this school, community, and church. I want to bring additional value to a talented advisory board and positively contribute the culture and vision of this committee. Luke Carlisle is an elected member of the Advisory Board.

Sheryl Vaterlaus

I was born and raised in Oregon and graduated from Portland State University in 1971. I moved to Idaho in 1972 to begin my banking career with First Security Corporation as the Boise Area Operations Manager. I left First Security in 1985 to travel in Europe.

For the following 10 years, I worked for Moore Financial Services/West One Bank. I ended my 23 year banking career as the Vice President of Operational Regulation and IRS Compliance.

My banking career was followed by 18 years on staff at Sacred Heart school. I created the business office and set up Sacred Heart's first accounting system for creating operational budgets and collecting tuition.

I was married to my husband, Alan Vaterlaus, for 35 years. We have one daughter, Alyson, who attended Sacred Heart from PK-8th grade and then went on to Bishop Kelly High School. Alyson returned to Sacred Heart as the assistance PK teacher and has been in that position for the past 12 years. Alyson also has a son in 7th grade and a daughter in PK at Sacred Heart.

In 1990 I joined the Sacred Heart School Foundation Board, of which I am still a member. I serve on the Advisory Board as a representative of the Foundation. Sheryl is the Sacred Heart Church appointed representative of the Advisory Board.

My family has been part of Sacred Heart School since our oldest daughter started preschool in 2019. From the moment we first walked through the doors, my husband and I felt that warm welcome that immediately reminded us of the close-knit Catholic schools and communities we grew up in, and we wanted our children to experience that as well. Our first impressions have been confirmed time and again, and we feel blessed to be part of the Sacred Heart community.

I serve as the Our Lady of the Rosary representative on the advisory board. My husband and I have been members of the OLR parish for 18 years, serving with youth and young adult ministries, Hallissey coaching, music ministry, and parish council over those years.

We currently have a third grader and a kindergartner at Sacred Heart, and their little brother looks forward to the day he can join them! Rebecca is the Our Lady of the Rosary appointed representative of the Advisory Board.

Catholic Education has laid a firm foundation in my life. After growing up in Southern Oregon, my first encounter with a Catholic education was college. I attended Gonzaga University in Spokane, WA for my undergraduate degree in Biology and Chemistry. I then continued my education at Creighton University in Omaha, NE for medical school. I moved to Boise in 2002 for my Family Medicine residency at the Family Medicine Residency of Idaho and soon after met my husband, Ryan. After we moved to the Depot Bench neighborhood in 2006, we joined Sacred Heart Catholic Church. We were blessed with the birth of our two boys in the coming years and feel fortunate to have brought them up as a part of the Sacred Heart community. Our oldest son, Noah, graduated from Sacred Heart in 2022 and is now at Bishop Kelly and our younger son, Alex, is currently in 7th grade. Elizabeth is an elected member of the Advisory Board.

I grew up on the Oregon Coast where fishing is plentiful and the views are gorgeous.  I attended Oregon State University and Pacific University earning a Master of Arts in Teaching.  I continued moving up the I-5 corridor and began teaching in the Seattle area.  After meeting my husband, who is from the Treasure Valley area, we began dreaming of moving to Boise.  We had three daughters in Seattle, and I became a stay at home mom.  After teaching in both a private Christian school and the public school system in Seattle we searched for a school that would be best for our daughters.  It wasn't easy and our oldest attended three elementary schools before we landed in the Catholic education system.  We like the structure of a Catholic education, higher standards, and the values that lead to positive character building.

Most recently, we finally fulfilled our dream of moving to Boise.  The transition from our Catholic School in Seattle to Sacred Heart Elementary was seamless and we couldn't be happier with the move.  This is our third year at Sacred Heart School where we have a first, a seventh grader, and a freshman at Bishop Kelly.  I am currently the Home and School president at Sacred Heart.  It is a pleasure to serve the Sacred Heart community with the shared goal of providing students with community events and activities that help our school shine. Shauna is the Home and School representative of the Advisory Board.

I am lucky to have lived in Boise for most of my life, moving here with my family when I was 7, and graduating from Boise State University with a degree in Spanish and Business Administration. My wife and I met while at Boise State, and she now teaches at Bishop Kelly. Our daughter (Zion, 10) started attending Sacred Heart in 2nd grade, and our son (Diego, 5) started in kindergarten this year, so we are personally invested in ensuring that Sacred Heart provides the best possible education for its students.

As a parent and community member, I understand the importance of creating a supportive and inclusive school environment. I believe that the kindness, community and friendship we have found at Sacred Heart are essential components of the school's excellent education.
