Sacred Heart Reading Specialist, Dr. Mary McGuire, has been hard at work using musical vocabulary to accelerate the skills of young readers.

Dr. McGuire developed a reading curriculum that integrates music, lyrics, and the Orff Schulwerk Approach to improve the literacy levels and skills of students struggling with reading.  This week, students utilized instruments and two -part ostinatos to teach new vocabulary.  For example, our younger readers learned the word "metamorphosis." A word that is typically very difficult for some students to read and say, is made simple when placed with rhythm and music. Even better, they get to play their very own instrument!

Dr. McGuire explained that music, language, and reading share the same neuro-pathways in the brain, thus making the combination a very powerful tool in developing the minds of students at Sacred Heart.
